What Is Yoni Steaming?

Yoni steaming (also called vaginal steaming or womb steaming) is a traditional self-care practice in which warm herbal steam is directed toward the external genital area (the vulva). The practice is done while clothed in a long skirt or wrap, allowing the steam to gently rise upward.

This is not a modern wellness trend. Variations of vaginal steaming have existed for generations across many cultures, including:

  • Central and South America (often referred to as bajos or vaginal steam baths)

  • Parts of Africa

  • Korea (known as chai-yok)

  • Southeast Asia and Indigenous traditions worldwide

How Often to Steam

Frequency matters. More is not better.

General guidelines:

  • 1–2 times per month is sufficient for most people

  • Ideal timing is after menstruation and before ovulation

  • Avoid steaming every day or multiple times per week

Some people may choose to steam:

  • Once per cycle as a grounding ritual

  • Occasionally during times of stress or transition

At-Home Yoni Steaming Guide

Prepare Your Space

Choose a quiet, warm, low-lit space where you won’t be interrupted.

You may wish to:

  • Light a candle or two

  • Create a simple altar or intentional space

  • Place cushions, a yoga mat, or a carpet under your knees for comfort

  • Play soft ambient or instrumental music (optional)

Have everything ready before you begin so you don’t need to rush.

What You’ll Need

  • A medium-sized heat-safe bowl (not too small, not too wide — roughly the size that holds about 2 cups of water)

  • Your yoni steaming herbal blend

  • 2 cups of hot water (from a kettle or stovetop)

  • A long, flowy skirt or dress (nothing tight)

  • A towel (optional, for extra insulation)

Preparing the Steam

  1. Boil 2 cups of water using a kettle or pot.

  2. Place one handful of the herbal blend into your bowl.

  3. Slowly pour the hot water over the herbs.

  4. Allow the herbs to steep briefly.

Safety check: Hover your hand several inches above the bowl. The steam should feel warm and soothing, never sharp or burning. If it’s too hot, wait until it cools.

Steaming Practice

  1. Wearing your long skirt, kneel or squat comfortably on the ground.

  2. Gently open your hips and place the bowl between your legs.

  3. Lower yourself over the bowl only once the temperature feels safe.

  4. Wrap your skirt (and towel if using one) around your waist and the bowl so the steam rises upward toward your yoni (vulva and vaginal opening).

Be mindful of the bowl’s position to avoid contact with your inner thighs or skin.

During the Steam (15 Minutes Maximum)

  • Steam for no longer than 15 minutes

  • Breathe slowly and deeply

  • Allow the pelvic area to soften

You may hold a gentle intention, such as releasing tension or simply being present with sensation.

Closing the Ritual

Rise slowly when you feel complete. Avoid rushing.

Dispose of the herbs by:

  • Flushing them down the toilet, or

  • Returning them to the earth with gratitude

Warm socks, hydration, or tea afterward can be supportive.

Integration & Reflection

Journaling is encouraged. Reflect on:

  • Physical sensations

  • Emotional shifts

  • Any insights or feelings of relaxation

There is no “right” experience.

Important Safety Guidelines & When NOT to Steam

Do not yoni steam if you are:

  • Pregnant or think you may be pregnant

  • Currently menstruating

  • Less than 6–8 weeks postpartum (or without medical clearance, especially after a C-section)

  • Experiencing a vaginal infection, UTI, yeast infection, or unexplained discharge

  • Actively bleeding or healing from surgery

Yoni steaming should never cause pain or burning. Stop immediately if discomfort occurs.
